In the early summer of 2010, Yvonne M. McShay decided to embark on a journey to document some historical recollections of the Northwest Lakeland community. During her research, she uncovered the experiences, challenges, triumphs, and silent contributions of successful individuals who have impacted the other end of Florida Avenue, the City of Lakeland, The State of Florida and yes, the world!
In the non-fiction book, Our Lakeland: The Other End of Florida Avenue, she presents the contemporary selfless journey of thirty-one diverse African Americans, living legends, from the Northwest Community of Lakeland, FL.
The book, which takes a slice of the community, is divided into four sections—engaging essays, exceptional profiles, local organizations, and interviews. The book offers readers a glimpse of the past and present with an invitation to continue the conversation about the future.

This book was very enlightening. Ms. McShay gave me an opportunity to explore and learn and experience another part of Floridians , I am from Georgia and recently moved to FL. She gives account of who what and why. The book introduces the reader to things off the beaten path. She allows you to enjoy and feel what the folks felt who lived thru the journey . When we think of Fl we think of Miami ,Jacksonville, Tallahassee and the more popular places, But here you find Lakeland a city full of history and untold stories. Ms. McShay takes pride in sharing her way of writing easy to read ,easy to understand and keep you turning the pages . WOW what a great book .
